This collection of pillows marked the beginning of my journey into home decor and furnishings. Each section was hand dyed using various traditional shibori techniques and natural indigo dye. To accentuate the patterns, I added cotton ribbon and hand beading.
I experimented with the kumo shibori (pleating and binding) technique and created a this figure 8 design.
The darker pigmentation of this pillow occurred by allowing the fabric to soak in an older batch of dye. The pattern was created by using itajime (pressure resist) and kanoko (binding) techniques. Smooth rocks were bound into the fabric with tightly woven string.
A classic example of kumo shibori. I pleated the fabric in a circular fashion and bound it with string.
Another example of itajime shibori. I arranged 4 smaller stones in each corner and used a larger stone in the center. Each stone was bound and dyed.
